In 2018, she released her first poetry collection titled, 2Fish. She touted to stardom as a singer with the American R&B group B2K and released hit songs such as The Worst and Sail Out. Her association with the group landed the singer her first record deal, but Jhene ended up walking away when music execs attempted to change her image and sound. Her songs won’t be playing in the club, but they will be someone’s favorite song. Jhené Aiko is an American singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA. She dropped her debut album, Souled Out, in 2014, but Jhene Aiko has actually been part of the music industry since the early 00s.Thats when she was hired to co-write songs for the former R&B group, B2K. Her stories are personal, deep and meaningful – something that the radio doesn’t deserve, but needs. “’Souled Out’ is a conceptual chronicling of the singer’s journey from darkness to light, rooted in tales of tragedy and spiritual awakening.” These two events would inspire what we hear from Jhene on her mixtapes, EPs and this debut album. Somewhere in between this moment and the release of the “Souled Out” album, she had a daughter, Namiko, and suffered the loss of her brother, Miyagi, to cancer. It’s the only thing we can take with us … wherever it is we go … She didn’t want to “sell” her soul, she wanted to “sail” her soul. She soon found herself wanting to get back into the industry because she felt ready.īefore going into a label meeting, she was told to “sell herself” in order to get a deal. She wanted to live in the real world, rather than the Hollywood Hills. She wanted to finish high school and live life like a normal teenager – learning and experiencing life, as she should.
